Getting Your File Approved, Part One

This week, we’re proud to feature a two part series written by Ben Gibbin, known as our very own bgm, one of GraphicRiver’s hard working reviewers. Ben and the rest of the team have handled thousands of files between them, and as such, they know better than anyone what common mistakes to avoid and tips to follow to make the submission (and approval!) process as easy as possible. Ben shares his technical tips and basics with us today. Don’t forget to watch next week for Part Two!

Take it away, Ben!

As a reviewer on GraphicRiver, I’ve grown to know the Review Guidelines very well and reviewed more files than grains of sand on the beach. I’ve reviewed some truly awesome files and then, some that aren’t so good.

In the case of the latter, the files usually haven’t followed the guidelines. It’s absolutely imperative you follow them to the tee. And so, with that in mind we’ve decided to publish a helpful two-parter series on how to increase the likelihood of having your file approved to our wonderful marketplace. (more…)

Author interview: Meet KenSHinH

1. Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?
I’m 21 years old, I live in Cartagena – Colombia enjoying the beautiful beaches,  that is the only place where I really can clear my mind and get far away from troubles and stress..
I’m a Technologist in systems, AS3 Developer and currently finishing my career in Systems Engineering.
I Work with a group of colleagues in websites developed in 100% flash and I can assure that our work is the best. We give our best effort to ensure that everything is perfect.
2. How long have you been designing and what made you start selling items on GraphicRiver?
Well, I’m not a graphic designer, but as I said I love everything that has to do with design, I have been working with photoshop for 4 years and still I have to learn a lot. Long ago, I wanted to go to ThemeForest, but my time is very limited (it is among my goals).
I can assure you that the best way to learn is by being persistent
3.       Do you create files from scratch for GraphicRiver, or do you re-use work that you’ve created for a client?
Yes, all my works are 100% created from scratch, work undertaken as a freelancer are never used to sell here, because I think it would be unfair with the original customer.
4.      Where do you get your inspiration from for your GraphicRiver work?
Well I can say that my inspiration comes from my tastes and what catches my attention, for example: my file Nebula Stars Backgrounds comes from one of the areas that I love, space, from childhood I wanted to learn more about what is outside this planet and know what is  beyond …
I will not deny that this is one of my favorite files and I put very much effort on it.
5.      What is your work flow like when starting a new file? Could you walk us through the steps you take when getting ready to create a new file?
To create a new file I must be free of stress, it is irritating when someone annoy at the moment.
So the first thing I do is open my music player and drop-style rock songs, electronica, salsa, and some ballads. Right now what I like to hear are the songs of a group named “Elefante” and another group named “Hipnosis” the latter is a group of my city.

6.   What do you do to market and brand your files?
For the moment all I can do is: promote my files on facebook, and twitter. I also take the opportunities offered by Envato for example: bundle birthday, I made enough sales then and now as a free archive of the month I hope to do many more: D
Envato Thanks!
7.   What advice can you give to authors that might help them increase their overall sales?
The best thing to do is: create your files with the best, do a job because you really like and because it gives you joy to know that people like what you do. It bothers me when some files are copied from other authors just because the original file is selling like hotcakes, you must be original, we must be innovative.
8.   Besides yourself, who is your favorite GraphicRiver author?
Well, I have some favorite authors but I prefer goTo! http://activeden.net/user/goTo and http://themeforest.net/user/epicera epicera work, I really think that these two authors have style and originality.
9.   Which file do you think is your best file so far?
The best selling file in my portfolio is Mega Pack Magazine http://graphicriver.net/item/mega-pack-magazine-mockup/46486  Mock-Up is a complete package of mock-ups for magazines, very smart and very well worked.
Soon I will upload another package of mock-ups with new style named Mega Pack Mock-Up # 2, culminating this month.
Later I will work harder on designing web pages in CSS.
10.  What one thing would you like to change about GraphicRiver if you could?
Honestly, the redesign I found amazing, there are still some bugs but I imagine it will be eventually corrected, the only thing that would change to GraphicRiver is the time delay on recent files, my files sometimes lasted just a few hours in recent and because it does not give the opportunity for all buyers to see.
11.  When you aren’t creating graphic files, what do you do for fun?
When I’m not making files available for GraphicRiver, I’m working at the company, ha ha ha!
But in the little free time, I’m watching movies, or watching TV series.
I like going out on weekends also eat hot dogs, hamburgers or pizza.
I think because of the beer and hot dogs I’ve been getting fatter, I was going to get to the gym soon.
12.  Would you like to give a sneak peek or some information about the latest file you are currently working on to our readers?
This month finishing my mock-ups with this work, I hope you like it.
here I leave a small sample of how it will be my next file.

1. Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?

I’m a graphic designer from Jonkoping, Sweden. I´m a coffee junkie, freelance writer/designer who does a lot of work for swedish sites and companies. I also have an education in sales that I got from my former employer a few years ago so, I guess we could say that I´m a salesman that love art and design to the point that he creates it himself.

But I´m trying to widen my horizon a bit so right now I practice to write more English articles and tutorials. And as some of you readers may know that I have written a tutorial for this blog before. I guess we could consider it outdated at the moment since the re-design made some difference for it´s usage. But it was a fun experience and I would really like to do another one soon. In the last few months I have taken my spare time to working on the web for different purposes to the point of I have become quite a popular person online.

For a living I´m writing articles and do a lot of design work for a friends company. Other than this, I moderate and reviewing designs over at ReviewMyDesign that´s owned and operated by Simon North. Even if I don´t get paid doing it I think it´s one of the those things you can do on your spare time. It´s fun to help people and to give them more experience when it comes to design. (more…)

Blog Action Day: GraphicRiver Goes Green

In 2007, Collis & Cyan created an initiative. One that combines the growing popularity of social networks and blogs with serious issues and awareness. Blog Action Day has a short but impressive history of uniting people all over the globe to link together, forming a massive chain of writers and readers to help raise awareness and discuss one common issue, we all share.

This year the Envato team passed Blog Action Day over to Change.org. Change.org is a site founded on the belief that people want to make a difference, people want to help. The website exists to inform and empower people to combat some of the most urgent issues of our time. Blog Action Day couldn’t be in better hands.

To celebrate this year’s theme of “Climate Change” I’ve poured through the GraphicRiver library for inspiration and selected some of the very best GraphicRiver files that celebrate the idea of ecological awareness, environmentalism, and generally going green. All these files are compiled in one helpful public bookmark collection for you to puruse: “GraphicRiver Goes Green.” Don’t forget to check out my top picks below!
