Maybe this post has to do with the fact that I am reading Gary Vaynerchucks book, Crush It, but I think that creating designs that really interest you is the way to go. I mean, doesn’t it sound more fun to design a file you think is cool that to do one that’s sole purpose is to make money? Don’t get me wrong, making money is awesome. But if you are in the marketplaces to make passive income, why not make it with files you love to create?
I know have talked about ways to research and create top selling files in the past. Many of those methods were based on supply and demand. Find out what the top selling files were and then create some of your own. While this method works just fine, it will eventually plateau out and create a plethora of like minded files.
Rather than follow along with the design trends of today, I suggest that you create designs and styles all of your own. If you are passionate about the designs you create, then they are more than likely going to be awesome. Passionate designers are the ones who create the trends.
What do you think? Will passionate design create the next big design trend?
I recently started reading Gary Vaynerchucks new book, Crush It. First let me say that the book is nothing short of amazing. It is a nice mix of Garys history, business advice, and inspiration. As I have been reading the book, I have been thinking about how I can use the principles in it for my own design business and other ventures. Recently, I have been pondering how these same principles could be used for authors in the marketplace. (more…)
While there may not be any statistics to back up the fact that marketplace files with video tutorials sell more, I say that they at least have a higher perceived value. By having a file that has a higher perceived value, you create the impression that your files are worth more than similar files without video tutorials. The result of this perceived value will hopefully be more sales. In this post, I share with you a tool that makes it so easy to create screencasts that you have no excuse for not making one! (more…)
I regularly browse the GraphicRiver marketplace and am constantly amazed at all the creative files that are for sale. That goes for all of the Envato Marketplaces really. There are just some amazing files for sale on these sites. It makes me wonder, how do you get these ideas? What inspires you to create such files?
I would love to know what your process is for creating file to sell on the marketplaces. Do you create file strictly to sell online? Or do you only post old and rejected client designs?
How many of you do research in t he marketplace before you create files to try and spot top selling trends and styles?
Today’s Talking Shop question comes from @iKitty. Here question is:
“What to do with criticism? Not everyone takes it the same and sometimes it can be too harsh. Can’t wait for the new episode!”
That is a great question! We as designers tend to put our heart and soul into our work. This is especially true if its a personal project of ours or for a project we feel strongly about. After working so hard on a design, we can get emotionally attached to the design. As a result, we can sometimes take critiques and criticism personally. (more…)

I find that “about” pages seem to be a very under utilized part of many portfolio website. If they even exist, they tend to be a short paragraph that reads more like a paragraph summary of the persons resume. Im sure this has a lot to do with the fact that many perceive About pages to be, for the most part, useless.
I’m constantly checking out all the new stuff that’s getting added to the Graphic River site. For the most part I am really excited to see so much great stuff. As a buyer, I wanted to offer some suggestions for how you might be able to increase your sales on the Graphic River site. (more…)
