Discussion – How many drafts of your portfolio exsist?

I guess this question is geared more toward web designers or anyone else who has ever tried to craft their own portfolio website. Why is it that we as web designers can design client websites all day long, but when it comes to our portfolio site we constantly draw a blank?

I can’t speak for other designers out there, but I find it much harder to design for myself than for my client. I am easily my own worst client. I’m that client who has a very vague idea of what they want, but want you to go ahead and start designing anyway. Mostly what happens is I come across another style or layout that I like more than the one I am currently working on. I see a site and think,

“That looks sweeet! I want to do something like that.”

This in and of its self isn’t really a bad thing. Except, I usually say this once a day or more!

As a result, I have countless numbers of drafts for possible portfolio designs. I think in my most recent re-design of Wordpress Designers (which hasn’t been coded yet) I went through at least 7 or 8 drafts. Sometimes I would even design a whole site, inner pages and all, then decide I didn’t like it. The scary part is, I am starting to feel that way about my most current completed re-design for it!

So, how about you? How many revisions do you usually go through before you settle on a final design for your personal projects or portfolio sites?
