1. Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?
I’m a web designer located in New Hampshire, USA, and have been self-employed since the start of 2009. The transition from being employed to working for myself has been an immense learning experience and one I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.
2. How long have you been designing and what made you start selling items on GraphicRiver?
3. Do you create files from scratch for GraphicRiver, or do you re-use work that you’ve created for a client?
A little of both. It is very common to end up with extra design elements that were not used on a client project and GraphicRiver has been a good place to give those files a second chance. I also like to take a break from coding every now and then to explore the creativity and freedom that design can offer.
4. Where do you get your inspiration from for your GraphicRiver work?
Everywhere, to be honest. Whether I’m researching other design styles or going for a hike outdoors, I’m constantly jotting down notes and ideas throughout the day.
5. What is your work flow like when starting a new file? Could you walk us through the steps you take when getting ready to create a new file?
I like to start with pen and paper first. This is a tough habit to get into since it can be tempting to jump right into Photoshop but sketching is much quicker and allows me to try more options early on. Once I have an idea of the target audience and purpose of the file, I like to research similar design styles to draw inspiration from and see what has already been done. After that, it’s just a matter of putting on some good music and getting to work.
6. What do you do to market and brand your files?
Currently, nothing, though I wish I had from the start. I see a number of authors add little logo icons to the thumbnail previews on their files and I think that’s a good idea.
7. What advice can you give to authors that might help them increase their overall sales?
The number one question I am asked is, “Would it be better to create lots of OK files or spend more time on fewer, better files?” I would definitely recommend taking the time to design original, high quality work. The added effort will help create a good reputation for your files and also increases your chances of being featured or included in the popular files list.
8. Besides yourself, who is your favorite GraphicRiver author?
LIAM_UK7 is putting out some amazing icon sets. I’m also enjoying the work of stigma5, triworks, segen, and many others.
9. Which file do you think is your best file so far?
I’ve been very happy with the response to my MODERN WEB UI file, which is currently free during the month of July, 2009.
10. What one thing would you like to change about GraphicRiver if you could?
I would really love to see a desktop widget for authors to track sales and account balance. I’ve spotted a few user-created solutions but I’m holding out for an official Envato release.
11. When you aren’t creating graphic files, what do you do for fun?
I’ve always been interested in technology, the outdoors, and anything with an engine. When not on the computer, I love camping, restoring classic cars, and spending time with family.
12. Would you like to give a sneak peek or some information about the latest file you are currently working on to our readers?
