The Illustrative Work of Short

Short has a way with his illustration work that makes illustrations one wuld normally find lame and childish pretty darn cool. I think a lot of that has to do his “Rat Fink” style of illustration. I mean who else could make a picture of a soccer loving hog look cool? Not a lot of people, that is for sure. Check out some more of his and let me know what you think!

Check out Shorts Blog to see more of his work.

Buy Now, Better Deposit Expiry and Fees for Bank Transfer Payments

The last 9 months we’ve been working hard on the financial parts of our system. During this time we’ve been building a better, more bulletproof accounting system into the app. It’s the kind of super important work that for the most part nobody notices, but ensures everything is working as it should. Along the way we’ve also been working on some other aspects which WILL be noticeable, and I’d like to tell you about three of them:

How Come?

OK, I promise it is only coincidence that both this weeks and last weeks featured authors are named David. It isn’t some sort of conspiracy, I promise. Davids work caught my eye after he uploaded his most recent file that includes a wide assortment of useful graphics for web design. Whats great about Davids other files is that any sort of web design elements you might need that aren’t included in his web element pack, are probably in his other files for sale. Need some login screens or more menu options? David has got you covered. I’m sure he is bound to come out with even more over the months to come.

Discussion – Whats Your Favorite Font?

Today’s discussion is more of a light hearted one than a serious one. Really, I would just like to hear what everyone’s favorite font is and why? You don’t have to have a complex reason for liking it, it could just be pretty! I’m no typophile, but I still enjoy a good font. I couldn’t tell you what makes a font good or bad, but I know a bad font when I see it.

Author interview: Meet KenSHinH

1. Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?
I’m 21 years old, I live in Cartagena – Colombia enjoying the beautiful beaches,  that is the only place where I really can clear my mind and get far away from troubles and stress..
I’m a Technologist in systems, AS3 Developer and currently finishing my career in Systems Engineering.
I Work with a group of colleagues in websites developed in 100% flash and I can assure that our work is the best. We give our best effort to ensure that everything is perfect.
2. How long have you been designing and what made you start selling items on GraphicRiver?
Well, I’m not a graphic designer, but as I said I love everything that has to do with design, I have been working with photoshop for 4 years and still I have to learn a lot. Long ago, I wanted to go to ThemeForest, but my time is very limited (it is among my goals).
I can assure you that the best way to learn is by being persistent
3.       Do you create files from scratch for GraphicRiver, or do you re-use work that you’ve created for a client?
Yes, all my works are 100% created from scratch, work undertaken as a freelancer are never used to sell here, because I think it would be unfair with the original customer.
4.      Where do you get your inspiration from for your GraphicRiver work?
Well I can say that my inspiration comes from my tastes and what catches my attention, for example: my file Nebula Stars Backgrounds comes from one of the areas that I love, space, from childhood I wanted to learn more about what is outside this planet and know what is  beyond …
I will not deny that this is one of my favorite files and I put very much effort on it.
5.      What is your work flow like when starting a new file? Could you walk us through the steps you take when getting ready to create a new file?
To create a new file I must be free of stress, it is irritating when someone annoy at the moment.
So the first thing I do is open my music player and drop-style rock songs, electronica, salsa, and some ballads. Right now what I like to hear are the songs of a group named “Elefante” and another group named “Hipnosis” the latter is a group of my city.

6.   What do you do to market and brand your files?
For the moment all I can do is: promote my files on facebook, and twitter. I also take the opportunities offered by Envato for example: bundle birthday, I made enough sales then and now as a free archive of the month I hope to do many more: D
Envato Thanks!
7.   What advice can you give to authors that might help them increase their overall sales?
The best thing to do is: create your files with the best, do a job because you really like and because it gives you joy to know that people like what you do. It bothers me when some files are copied from other authors just because the original file is selling like hotcakes, you must be original, we must be innovative.
8.   Besides yourself, who is your favorite GraphicRiver author?
Well, I have some favorite authors but I prefer goTo! http://activeden.net/user/goTo and http://themeforest.net/user/epicera epicera work, I really think that these two authors have style and originality.
9.   Which file do you think is your best file so far?
The best selling file in my portfolio is Mega Pack Magazine http://graphicriver.net/item/mega-pack-magazine-mockup/46486  Mock-Up is a complete package of mock-ups for magazines, very smart and very well worked.
Soon I will upload another package of mock-ups with new style named Mega Pack Mock-Up # 2, culminating this month.
Later I will work harder on designing web pages in CSS.
10.  What one thing would you like to change about GraphicRiver if you could?
Honestly, the redesign I found amazing, there are still some bugs but I imagine it will be eventually corrected, the only thing that would change to GraphicRiver is the time delay on recent files, my files sometimes lasted just a few hours in recent and because it does not give the opportunity for all buyers to see.
11.  When you aren’t creating graphic files, what do you do for fun?
When I’m not making files available for GraphicRiver, I’m working at the company, ha ha ha!
But in the little free time, I’m watching movies, or watching TV series.
I like going out on weekends also eat hot dogs, hamburgers or pizza.
I think because of the beer and hot dogs I’ve been getting fatter, I was going to get to the gym soon.
12.  Would you like to give a sneak peek or some information about the latest file you are currently working on to our readers?
This month finishing my mock-ups with this work, I hope you like it.
here I leave a small sample of how it will be my next file.

There’s only a few days left to pick up this month’s Free File of the Month! This month, we interview free file author KenSHinH! KenSHinH’s a fantastic member of the community with top sales and a popular series of packs and textures. Read on to find out more about this talented designer, grab the Free File of the Month for November…and don’t forget to check out his portfolio!

The Stlyish Work of Lois van Baarle

I don’t even really know where to start when trying describe the work of Lois van Baarle. Its like a modern version of vintage childrens books. At least that is the best way I can think of how to describe the majority of her work. What is cool though, is she has a style that can transfer over into various mediums and within other styles. that isn’t something a lot of artists can do. But, I will let her work speak for its self. Many of these images are for sale as prints, so be sure to support the artists if you like her work!

Featured File – U.S. Letter Editorial Samplers

I decided to feature these U.S. Letter Editorial Samplers by GraphicRiver author, blankartist, because I think they are a great idea for a file. I have had the idea for a while now that some website wireframes could make for some good selling files. Seems like some good wireframes that were well made and properly organized could do really well on the marketplaces. While blankartist hasn’t creating any website wireframes, they did create some really nice looking print layouts.

While I haven’t seen any of these files full size, they look pretty good from the previews. If I could make one suggestion to the author, it would be to link to some full size previews of the files

Discussion – How many drafts of your portfolio exsist?

I guess this question is geared more toward web designers or anyone else who has ever tried to craft their own portfolio website. Why is it that we as web designers can design client websites all day long, but when it comes to our portfolio site we constantly draw a blank?

How Come?

I really like Davids work for a number of reasons. First off, his attention to detail is great. He really spends a lot of time polishing of his images and it shows. If you are a fan of Apple web design or Meta Labs, you are sure t be a fan of David’s work. The other reason I enjoy his work, is that he really breaks the mold with some of his designs. Take his latest menu submission for example, this is a great file. It is innovative and original, two great qualities to have in a stock file!

Joseba Elorza Brings back the Collage

Joseba Elorza is a freelance illustrator whos specialty is to create some outstanding collage style works. He has certainly made a very unique style for himself. The works he creates all seem to have a retro and dream like feel to them. They seem nostalgic and fresh all at the same time. Joseba is based out of Spain and has a portfolio site here.

In my opinion, it is nice to see a Photoshop artist create a style for themselves, rather than just follow along with design trends and the most recent tutorials. What do you guys think about Joseba’s work?
