This post is a lot cooler than it sounds and was actually a lot cooler to put together than I thought it would be. I came across a lot of really cool files I had never seen in the marketplaces before. I gathered these files from a discussion post I did a while back asking for authors to share their top selling file. It didn’t have to have a lot of sale, but just be their top selling file. I wanted to use this as a way to help promote some of the great files that may not have a ton of sales.
The result was a great collection of files, some of which I had never seen. Job well done guys! Its easy to see why these are your top selling files. While I did browse every file listed in the comments, I just picked 10 at random to showcase. If you want to see the rest, and I suggest you do, you can view the comments here.

If you know me at all, you know I have an obsession with icons. Recently, GraphicRiver author amwillis uploaded his icon set titled Smooth Icon Set. I’m not sure, but I think it may be one of the largest icon sets for sale on Graphic river, second only to Liaum_uk7’s icon sets. Sheer number of icons aside, this set is truly stunning. I love how its a fine mix 32×32 pixelated icons and super polished icons. I can easily see these icons being used in anything from web designs, applications, interfaces, and much more.
I really look forward to seeing what else amwillis comes up with in the months to come. I think some more sets of this size and style will treat him well.

There are a wide variety of designers that come to GraphicRiver in search of the perfect file for their various projects. Some are freelancers looking for print designs to help look more professional. Others are web designers in search of stylized elements to help make their job that much easier.

How Come?
Vexsoft has been creating web design elements and other files for GraphicRiver almost since it opened. I know, because I purchased a file from this particular author shortly after they released it. If you are a web designer who is looking for some ever so slightly styled web elements to help you speed up your design or wire frame process, Vexsoft has got you covered. Aside from web elements like buttons and sliders, Vexsoft also has a couple business card layouts as well.

If you like pretty colors and super slick CG images, then you will love the work of Lee Davies. If you’re into music and pop culture icons, then you will really really loves his work. With his Maya work, we has taken celebrity characture to a whole new level and made it uniquely his own. The second half of this post showcases his Photoshop painting skills which are almost as amazing as his rendering skills.
What do you think? Which one is your favorite?
I like the CG Mr. T!

Yes, I have featured EAMejia on here in the past and I’m going to do it again. Why? Because this author constantly puts out high quality files that are trendy, versatile, and stylish. High quality files like these are the ones that are going to make sales and really help improve the quality of files on the marketplace. I like this set of backgrounds because, while it follows some popular trends (stars and multi-color backgrounds) it does so in a more unique style. Thus, EAMejia has done a good job at finding trendy, top selling files, and found a way to make them more unique.
This file has limitless uses really. It can be used for anything from a web background to a business card background. The file size is so large and hi-res that you can use it for almost anything short of a billboard.

Maybe this post has to do with the fact that I am reading Gary Vaynerchucks book, Crush It, but I think that creating designs that really interest you is the way to go. I mean, doesn’t it sound more fun to design a file you think is cool that to do one that’s sole purpose is to make money? Don’t get me wrong, making money is awesome. But if you are in the marketplaces to make passive income, why not make it with files you love to create?
I know have talked about ways to research and create top selling files in the past. Many of those methods were based on supply and demand. Find out what the top selling files were and then create some of your own. While this method works just fine, it will eventually plateau out and create a plethora of like minded files.
Rather than follow along with the design trends of today, I suggest that you create designs and styles all of your own. If you are passionate about the designs you create, then they are more than likely going to be awesome. Passionate designers are the ones who create the trends.
What do you think? Will passionate design create the next big design trend?
I really enjoy helping out new freelancers and designers. As such, I would like to offer my advice to anyone willing to ask me a question. What I am proposing is a “Dear Abbey” type column, but without all the sex and personal problem junk. Rather, I would like to help you all with any problems or questions you have with the freelance design business. I am also happy to take questions about the marketplaces if you have any.
Rather than posting a boring written reply to your answer, I’ll be doing a combination of a video and written response.
So, I guess that makes this weeks discussion, what do you want to know about the business of freelance designing?

I am a fan of what good water color textures and photos can accomplish. A good watercolor background can go a long way. They can help you create a super grunge design or soft, light hearted design. GraphicRiver author thomasfedb has created a couple of sets of hi res watercolor textures and some great splatter brushes. I know a lot of this style of textures are available for free online, but these are so big and so good, they are worth the few bucks they cost.
